Q: I send in my manuscript for editing, then what?
A: I will edit it and send it back. Once you have it, you go through and make changes, which sometimes requires some re-writing. Once you are done, typically people will then send it in for a second time to make sure that everything still flows and makes sense after their changes have been made. Typically this second round of editing goes faster, and there are less edits to deal with when you get it back. Then it is usually ready for your next step on your publishing journey.
Q: What can I do while I wait for my work to be edited?
A: While you are waiting for your work to be edited it is a good time to work on getting a cover that you love, or it is a fabulous time to work on query letters or your next piece of writing. You can work on developing a website, or use the time to come up with a marketing plan.
Q: How do I deal with the edit suggestions I get from you?
A: Suggestions where changes need some attention will appear in one of three ways; the work appears with red typing/underlines, there are notes in the margin, or general things on the attached page. For the edits needing to be fixed in red, you simply right-click on it, and "accept" or "reject" the change I have made. Then the red goes away and the document either automatically makes the change, or it reverts back to the way you gave it to me. For comments in the margins, those are usually explanations, or issues with plot or coherency or chronology etc. those you have to deal with in the story line, make your changes, and then you can right-click on the note to make it go away. For notes on the attached page, those are things for you to consider for the manuscript or writing style as a whole.
Q: How do I pay for services?
A: Payments can be made through Paypal or email transfer.
Q: When do I have to pay for my services?
A: Generally, funds are due when the service is complete. I would send you an invoice through email when the editing is complete, and payment is expected at that time.
Q: Should I copyright my work before I send it?
A: That is necessary. I have high ethical standards and as such, would never plagiarize your work. If it makes you more comfortable, you are more than welcome to copyright your work before you send it, but it is not required. Please keep in mind that if you send a digital copy for editing, you must have editing enabled on your document so I can make changes to it.
Q: Do I need to purchase an ISBN?
A: Not at this stage. An ISBN, or International Standard Book Number, is an identification number given to a number of types of publications from books to CD-ROMs. Part of that identification number denotes the publisher, so that won't be required until you are either ready to self-publish, or your work gets published through a publishing house.
Q: How long will I have to wait for editing to be completed?
A: This changes from book to book. Editing times vary based on the length of a book, and how many corrections are needed. We have edited books in under two weeks, (and shorter works like essays or children's books in a couple of days), but other very heavy editing jobs with lots of spelling errors, grammatical issues, and incorrect verb tenses will obviously take longer. These can take possibly up to a month or two for an average 250 page book.
